Vijayawada: The State government had completed the exercise of preparing priorities for the 33 municipalities and municipal corporations that have been selected under the Central government-sponsored AMRUT cities for the 2016-17.

The government had conducted two-day workshop here with the municipal commissioners, chairpersons and senior officers of the urban local bodies and department of the municipal administration and urban development.

Speaking to mediapersons after the conclusion of the two-day workshop, Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development, Dr P Narayana, said that the State government had completed preparing budget with priorities for each of the 33 AMRUT cities for the 2016-17 financial year. He said that the Central government would give Rs 400 crore for the financial year for which the State would have to add another Rs 400 crore.

The government had received Rs 333 crore for 2015-16 from the Central government for which the State had added an equal amount. Works for Rs 666 crore would soon begin in all the 33 AMRUT cities in the State shortly, he added.

The Minister further said that the Central government had set 28 performance parameters for all the AMRUT cities to receive funds. The cities in AP have fulfilled 27 parameters leaving rationalisation of drinking water charges, he said. The Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) were now making efforts to rationalise the drinking water charges and AP would become the first State in the country to have fulfilled 100 per cent performance parameters and would receive a 10 per cent additional funding from the Centre under the scheme.

The Minister said that the State had also created a record by erecting LED streetlights across the State. He said all ULBs have replaced their existing streetlights with the LEDs and have thus brought down the energy consumption and power bills in the State. Stating that the State required to replace 5.50 lakh streetlights, the Minister said that the ULBs have already replaced 4.50 lakh streetlights.

The waste disposal too was taken up seriously by the ULBs in the State, he said and added that the municipalities were asked to give their waste for the energy plants that would come up soon. The government had approved the proposal for establishing power plants using the urban waste and asked the municipalities to complete the task.

The Minister further said that the government had already completed the online clearance facility for the building plans in all municipalities. The applications are being cleared in just two minutes if the documents and planning were as per the rules, he said.
