At a round-table conference organised by taxpayers association in Vijayawada on Sunday on the handing over of Swaraj Maidan to the Chinese company, former Minister Vadde Sobhanadreeswara Rao described it as an undemocratic act of the State government. He said that the Swaraj Maidan earlier known as the PWD grounds served as a public platform to express democratic views of people and used for spiritual gatherings, knowledge gatherings like book exhibition and industrial and agricultural exhibitions.

He said thousands of people used to throng Swaraj Maidan to acquire knowledge. The former Minister said the State government has been violating the Supreme Court directions on a usage of the public place for private purposes. He alleged that the government is trying to hand over the public place to Chinese company using police force.

Tax Payers Association president Sambireddy stressed the need for launching a struggle setting aside political affiliations to save Swaraj Maidan. He said students should be mobilised in a big way as the ground serves them. He said the State government’s action indicates its crazy for handing over public places to foreign countries.

Association secretary Anjaneyulu said that Swaraj Maidan has been serving as a knowledge hub with several exhibitions including book exhibition being organised at the ground which has received nation-wide recognition. He said that the ground served as a stage providing the opportunity to people to express their democratic views.

The ground also gained prominence with meetings during the freedom struggle. MLC B Nageswara Rao said the government has been trying to deprive opportunity to a middle class and poor to visit the exhibitions being organised at the grounds regularly. He said thousands of children throng the PWD grounds for playing as the existing schools have no playgrounds.

The government will be depriving such an opportunity for students by handing over the public site to multinational companies. CPM city secretary Donepudi Kasinath said that the State government has been trying to hand over the Swaraj Maidan costing Rs 1,500 crore to a Chinese company for Rs 135 crore.
