Visakhapatnam: First of its kind in India, the Visakhapatnam beach will soon have sea pools to prevent people from the risk getting drowned. These pools will be set up on pilot project basis and on their success more such pools would be created all along the 23 kilometre beach road.

The four pilot projects would be located at Mangamaripeta, Lawson’s Bay, Rushikonda and Sagaranagar, which are considered to be safe for swimming, when compared to other beaches in the city. APTDC and GVMC engineers are entrusted with the job of setting up sea pools, while the Tourism Department would fund the pilot projects.

  • To be launched at 4 places
  • Move initiated as a measure to save lives
  • APTDC to fund the pools which will be in line with that of pools in South Africa and the US

It is being said that the district administration came up with this project as it was under increasing pressure to protect lives of people. The incident at RK Beach couple of weeks ago, where five people were drowned propelled them to take immediate measures. It should be noted that during the last 10 years, 465 people including 75 women were drowned in the sea.

A beach safety meeting was held with various departments and the stake holders on Tuesday in which several methods were discussed to protect the lives, while allowing the people to go into the water. The primary responsibility was entrusted to the police department which will coordinate with other agencies.

The police would identify the location of 10 watch towers basing on the data available on under currents and vulnerable points. Sea pools are popular in South Africa and US where elevated pools were constructed on the beach with water filtered from sea. The pools are constructed to regulate the water temperature and protect people from shark attacks.

The meeting also discussed on increasing the number of life guards, deployment of all terrain vehicles, inflatable boats, restriction structures, floating walls and other implements. District collector Dr N Yuvaraj, who presided over the beach safety meeting, asked the officials to study Marina Beach model if it can be implemented in Visakhapatnam.
