Vijayawada: Social network has become a predominant part of the young lives. With its numerous benefits on one side, these sites are also opening avenues for a new level of harassment and abuse through internet. Of late, realising the need to curb cyber crime that is growing in the city, Police Commissioner has ordered for a special Cyber Policing Cell with dedicated personnel.
Followed by complaints lodged at the police stations by college going girls, a few of the young and educated graduates involved in harassing women through social network sites and WhatsApp were traced out and were taken into custody.
Morphing and obscene images, abusive phrases and sexual content is being used to mentally and physically harm the women on the social media platform. For example, after an engineering student lodged a complaint about fake account with morphed pictures, police have traced down the culprit as Karumanchi Sai Kiran (21), a B Tech graduate of Thulluru village of Guntur district.
He created a fake account of the complainant with morphed pictures of her face and sent them to the girl’s original account. Shocked girl tried to get in touch with the person and identified him as her senior at college. She was later threatened of circulating the pictures if she tries to block or resist his motive.
However, police had nabbed him and recovered two laptops, a cell phone and a Wi-Fi router. There were several instances where innocent women who do not know about fake profiles have been threatened over similar issues. Miscreants tried to obtain money and personal favours from this blackmail.
There were number of incidents, which did not see the light of the day, where women were subjected to psychological torture. In another instance, a case was filed in Penamaluru police station by a woman who complained that obscene content was being sent to her WhatsApp contact.
The Cyber Policing Cell arrested Kanuri Satya Srinivasa Babu and Gogineni Yogi Chowdary for it. Their laptops and cell phones were seized. Speaking about the behavior of the youngsters with Anti-Social Personality Disorder (ASPD), psychiatrist Indla Rama Subba Reddy said, “Family background plays an important role in nurturing the children.
Youngsters with this behavior are ignored; not cared for by their own families. “They suffer abnormality and tend to get carried away. There must be a severe reason behind their growing up, say alcoholism in their parents, lack of affection, brothel background, which are armed by the media, social platforms and pornographic content that is unrestricted.
They inspire from these elements to put them to practice. Another factor of these young is that they are guilt-free though they were punished for such deeds. They are very demanding.”
