Pithapuram: East Godavari District Collector H Arun Kumar said that 550 tanks will be restored soon at a cost of Rs 42 crore under Neeru-Chettu programme.

He participated as chief guest at Nava Nirmala Deeksha at Viravada on Sunday. Local legislator SVSN Verma also attended the programe.

Speaking on the occasion, the Collector said that the State government is committed to farmers’ welfare. Tanks help augment groundwater table and also tide over drinking water crisis, the Collector said, adding that the tank restoration works will be in force till the onset of the monsoons.

“Modernisation of Yeleru canal would provide irrigation facility to tail-end farmers. Soil tests carried out on 56,000 samples indicate deficiency of zinc, gypsum and boram. The nutrients will be supplied to farmers to overcome the deficiency on 50 per cent susbdiy,” he said.

He asked the farmers to remit their crop insurance premium. The government sanctioned Rs 19 crore to purchase farm mechanisation equipment on 50 per cent subsidy, the Collector said.

To overcome fodder shortage, he said the plan is to raise fodder crops in 5,000 acres. Besides, RS 80 lakh is being spent to produce azola cattle feed, he added.

The MLA said that efforts are on to develop agriculture and allied sectors. The government will come to the rescue of farmers by completing modernisation of the Yeleru canal. Later, the District Collector was felicitated by farmers and leaders of various political outfits.

ZPTC member Barla Appa Rao, MPP Vijayalata and sarpanches of various villages, party leaders and others took part in the felicitation programme.
