The Gangavaram Port employees and people of neighbouring villages took the pledge to maintain cleanliness and greenery on the occasion. Under its Green Belt Development programme the Port planned to plant 60,000 saplings during this year on the Port premises and neighbourhood areas. 

Visakhapatnam: World Environment Day was celebrated at the local Public Sector Undertakings and private organisations on Sunday by taking up massive plantation programmes and awareness rallies.

The Gangavaram Port employees and people of neighbouring villages took the pledge to maintain cleanliness and greenery on the occasion. Under its Green Belt Development programme the Port planned to plant 60,000 saplings during this year on the Port premises and neighbourhood areas.

Earlier, Port senior officials and employees participated in the rally organised by the Pollution Control Board on the R K Beach.

The month-long events organised by the environment department of Vizag Steel Plant concluded at Ukkunagaram here with the celebration of World Environment Day on Sunday.

Joint Chief Environmental Engineer Madhushudhana Rao who was the chief guest asked the management to initiate steps to contain industrial pollution by taking up plantation frequently.

CMD P Madhusudan informed about their commitment in protecting environment and the plans for improvement in the next few years. He said the RINL had so far planted more than 5 million saplings covering more than 40% of its land and moving towards planting another 1.3 million saplings with the aim of 1 tree for every ton of steel produced.

Prizes were distributed to the winners of various competitions held on the occasion of World Environment Day. Green awards were presented to 80 employees for their contribution towards better environment at the work spots. To mark the occasion, saplings were planted at 30 departments.
