Vijayawada: The Krishna district education department has failed to come out with the exact number of schools that were running albeit not recognised by government of Andhra Pradesh for the kick started academic year. Unlike the previous years, it is observed that the department has not come forward with any kind of awareness programmes for parents on risks they might have to face for enrolling their children in unrecognised schools.

It is mentioned that District Education Officer (DEO) has directed the concerned mandal level education officers to issue notices to the schools found unrecognised. The preliminary inquiry about the schools brought to the fore the fact that there are 35 unrecognised schools in the city limits alone. A majority of them are the branches of reputed corporate institutions. For the last three years, many corporate institutions were found to be operating without necessary registration for some of their branch institutions.

A day before, the department has slapped management of Chaitanya Schools with a fine of Rs 1 lakh for operating without required documents. However, the question arises if the schools need recognition or should possess standards of quality and competent education. If schools can function for a while by accepting penalties, the quality of education will be at stake.

There were 103 schools in the year 2013 that were identified as unrecognised and 140 in the year 2014. In the year 2015, the department found 105 schools that were continuing operations without obtaining necessary government approvals. For the year 2016, the department however couldn’t state the exact number of schools that are not approved.

The Unified District Information System for Education (U-DISE) reports, which have to be sent by every management of functional schools, have not been received by the department. There are many schools that are yet to submit the U-DISE reports, which bring out clarity on the issue. Progressive Democratic Student Federation (PDSU) of the city demanded that government strengthen the government education system. “There is no action on the unrecognised schools so far.

Levying penalty is nothing but allowing low quality education to prevail rather than to restrict the private players. Only when the children of government employees are made to study in government schools, the system of education settles at the quality. Residential schools with hostels have to be safeguarded and equipped with facilities,” they said.
