Visakhapatnam: Chairman of Andhra Pradesh State Warehousing Corporation L V S R K Prasad disclosed that latest technology will be used to strengthen the functioning and increase the storage capacity of warehouses.

He said that steps are being taken to utilise latest technology to suit the day-to-day changes coming in the industrial and domestic sectors as a part of government’s initiative to develop the State with high storage capacity of cold and dry warehouses.

Prasad was here on Tuesday to participate in a three-day capacity building training programme on “Agri-warehousing and scientific storage practices to warehouse managers and the technical staff.” Speaking at the inaugural function, he said that the capacity building programme was aimed at tapping the hidden skills of the staff and a test will be conducted on the last day.

Those who excelled in the test will be sent to the national-level events, he added. The chairman said that presently, the State Warehousing Corporation, which was equipped with a storage capacity of 6.10 lakh metric tonnes, is utilising private warehouses with a capacity of 5.5 metric tonnes. He also felt the need to increase the storage capacities to meet the needs of farmers and as a part of it, the corporation has given permission to construct the agriculture marketing committee buildings.

The chairman said that a cold and dry storage warehouses will be built in Visakhapatnam district in 12 acres with Rs 100 crore to be funded by the Ministry of Commerce and it was also proposed to set up Aqua University in Bhimavaram. Similarly, an action plan has been chalked out to build warehouses to store mirchi crop in Guntur district in 27 acres.

He appealed to the employees to work hard to get more profits and assured that the services of contract-based and out-sourced workers will be regularised basing on their work. Resource persons P E Prasad, Dr K Jayaraj and Dr Sailendra Singh, Regional Manager, State Warehousing Corporation, Vizianagaram Sambasiva Rao and district managers, technical staff of north Andhra were present.
