Visakhapatnam: HRD Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao has asked the farmers to adopt modern technology for farming for reaping rich output, the way the farmers are benefitting in Israel deserts.

Addressing a public meeting after participating in ‘Yeruvaka Pournami’ in Podugupalem village of Anandapuram, about 20 km from the city on Monday, the Minister said the State government was making all out efforts to benefit the farmers in spite of a Rs 16,000 deficit budget.

Setting a record, the government waived a loan of Rs 7,565 crore benefiting 62,72, 781 farmers in the State in the first phase. The second phase of loan waiver would be taken up from June 22 for which the government would spend Rs 3,200 crore to benefit 20,43,000 farmers.

He said farm inputs were being given on subsidy with technical assistance by experts to get better yield.
Zilla Parishad Chairperson Lalam Bhavani said the farmers should utilise the benefits being extended by the government.

Collector Dr N Yuvaraj said the district has 10 lakh acres out which only 4.19 lakh acres was getting irrigation water. He said if the Polavaram left canal was completed in 2017, another 1.5 lakh acres would come under
irrigation.

He said under Neeru-Chettu programme, an amount of Rs 5 crore was disbursed last year for various works and this year an amount of Rs 80 lakh was sanctioned.

Additional joint collector D Venkata Reddy explained the general agriculture scenario in the district and availability of water resources.
Earlier, the Minister sporting farmer’s dress- a crisp dhoti and silk kurta tilled the land to mark the occasion.
All the senior officials of agriculture, horticulture and revenue officials were present.
