​Kakinada: With the onset of monsoons and reopening of schools, massive activity is going on for the plantation drive in East Godavari district.

The Forest department has taken up planting of 1.62 crore saplings in schools that have water facility. The saplings would be planted in 162 schools and public places and the process has begun from June second week. The officials of Forest department have shortlisted schools in rural and urban areas for plantation drive.

The plantation drive will take place in ZP schools in Kotananduru, Tondangi, Tuni, Pithapuram, Kakinada rural, Karapa, Kajuluru, Tallarevu, and Gandepalli.

The plantation drive will also take place in government offices. The officials will be carrying out the activity at various government offices in VR Puram, Chintur, Yetapaka and Kunavaram mandals.

In a bid to give a fillip to the activity, the Forest department is involving school children as National Green Corps [NGC] ambassadors. As a part of the initiative they had selected schools that would be responsible for the activity right from plantation of saplings to nurturing the plants till the student competes his schooling from class VI to X in the same school.

For effective monitoring and supervision, the Forest department in association with the Education department has promoted a nodal officer system.

Under this programme, the head master of particular school acts as the nodal offer at school level. Similarly at mandal, division and district level, MEO, Dy EO and DEO will act as nodal officers.

Speaking to The Hans India, Social Forestry divisional officer V S R K Appanna said that in addition to distribution of saplings, bio-fencing activity was also taken up in several schools. We will continue with the plantation drive throughout the rainy season in association with Education department,” he added.
