Eluru: The agricultural activity has gathered pace in West Godavari district with monsoons and low-pressure in the Bay of Bengal providing bountiful of rains. The farmers have started Eruvaka in the month of June after the Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu took part in the Eruvaka programme at Chittavaram village in Narsapur mandal.

In Godavari delta, the farmers have planted the paddy nurseries, in upland areas they have even took up tilling of lands. It should be noted that Agriculture department has targeted to cultivate paddy in 2.40 lakh hectares in the kharif season.

Meanwhile, the rains due to low pressure have lashed some areas in the delta. The water was stagnated in the fields and the Irrigation officials closed the Godavari canals in the last week of June as a protective measure.

However, farmers have to shell out huge bucks to pump out stagnated water from the nurseries. Venkateswara Raju of Velivarru village in Undi mandal said that he had to spend Rs 2,000 per acre to pump out water to save the paddy nurseries.

Officials said that planting of saplings would be completed by July second week in Undi mandal, while farmers have started planting of saplings in delta area. In Upland areas, farmers have started agricultural activities.

They also planted the nurseries and ready to take up the plantation of saplings. In Tadepalligudem, Nallajerla, Nidadavole mandals farmers have planted saplings.

Speaking to The Hans India, joint director of Agriculture department Sai Lakshmeswari said that nurseries have been planted in 11,000 hectares in the district.

We aim to cultivate 2.40 lakh hectares in the district,” she added and hoped of high yield this year.However, the agriculture activity is yet to start in Krishna eastern delta under Eluru Krishna Canal, as there is no water.
