Vijayawada: Rio Olympics badminton silver medalist P V Sindhu and her coach Pullela Gopichand got a warm welcome on their arrival at the Gannavaram Airport on Tuesday. Sindhu and Gopichand were in the city for the felicitation organised by the State government.

Local MP Kesineni Srinivasa Rao, State government representative in New Delhi K Rama Mohana Rao and others accompanied them when they came from Hyderabad in a special flight to Gannavaram. Minister for Sports and Youth Services K Atchannaidu accorded a warm welcome to Sindhu and Gopichand on behalf of the State government.

Upon their arrival, a huge rally was taken out from airport to Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation Stadium. Sindhu and Gopichand stood on a specially decorated vehicles waving and cheering the crowd along the highway from Gannavaram to Vijayawada. Thousands of students waited on National Highway to greet Sindhu and coach Gopichand.

The city police diverted the traffic for smooth conduct of rally. Villagers of Kesarapalli under Gannavaram mandal offered ‘Pattu Vastralu’ to Sindhu and Gopichand. It nearly took three hours for the rally to conclude at the stadium. Speaking on the occasion Sindhu said that it was a very happy moment in her life as thousands of students came to the rally to welcome her.

“I will win more medals with the blessings of Telugu people and coach Gopichand,” Sindhu said. “Vijayawada is my grandfather’s hometown, and I used to come and practice shuttle in Vijayawada during the holidays,” she said.
