It may be recalled here that all trade unions of steel plant have served a strike notice on the management long ago, stating that all sections of the plant would participate in the nation-wide strike on September 2. Considering the strike notice as the mode of conciliation talks’, the Regional Labour Commissioner told the meeting that Vizag Steel is a Public Sector Undertaking and a manufacturing unit.

If the process is stopped even for a day, the plant may incur heavy loss and will take time to restore normalcy in production in many units. In the larger interests of the nation and public, I request you not to participate in the ensuing industrial strike but to protest in some other manner’, the Labour chief informed the leaders.

However, general secretary, Steel plant recognised union Visakha Steel Employees’ Congress Rajasekhar Mantri told the Central Labour Chief that it was the call given by the national trade union leaders against anti-worker and anti-people policies of both State and Central governments.

‘Even though the date of strike was announced long back, the Centre has not responded till date since it has no commitment in the welfare of working class which was very unfortunate. Let the Central government talk to the Central Trade Union leaders and there was no going back from the strike’, he reiterated.

The leader of AITUC which was the previous Steel recognised union Adinarayana alleged that the Centre is trying to amend Industrial Labour Act to dilute the rights of the working class to give teeth to corporate and private sector.

He also informed that it will be inevitable to desist from the nation-wide strike adding that they were also demanding the State government to supply adequate water and captive iron ore mines to the Vizag Steel Plant along with the labour issues.
