Veerapuram (Anantapur): Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu appealed to the people of the State to treat him as elder son and cooperate with him in his quest to develop the State. He interacted with local farmers here on Wednesday and enquired on how rain guns were helping them to wet their drying crops.

Farmers Ramanjaneyulu, Govindu and Sanjeeva told the Chief Minister that they benefited from the soak pits and farm ponds, which they dug in their crop lands and used rain guns to cultivate their crops from the stored water. However, several farmers admitted that due to lack of awareness they could not sink soak pits or farm ponds.

The Chief Minister told the farmers that their precarious condition would have been averted had they heeded to his advice. “Next year things will be more organised. We will do a better job related to action plans to meet exigencies of the kind,” he vowed.

Naidu sanctioned a groundnut research station for the district, which would focus on growing quality groundnut for export. “No place in the world cultivates groundnut in such a large acreage as in Anantapur district. Every year groundnut is grown in 7 lakh hectares. The farmers will get better price, if they cultivate export quality nuts, as they have a large demand in the western and European countries. The district should emerge as groundnut export hub,” he averred.

He appealed to the farmers to use science and technology to get value addition for their crops, extract remunerative price and achieve higher yields. He sympathised with the farmers for experiencing drought four times in 18 years, which had its bearing on their fragile economy. He informed that one extension officer has been appointed for every 1000 hectares of the crop and these officers would guide the farmers and help upgrade their farming skills using technology.

The Chief Minister promised to complete Handri-Neeva project and bring Krishna water through the project to Hagiri and Vedavathi rivers. He said that a Command and Control Room was opened at the district head quarters and the officials would monitor crops in the 14 Assembly constituencies. Those in need of rain guns for wetting their crops can contact the control room at Anantapur, he informed.

Naidu reiterated that AP is the only State in the country, which has introduced rain guns to save standing crops. He promised that things would be different next year as Krishna water would be brought to the district through the Handri-Neeva project phase one. He announced an assistance of Rs 20 crore to Rayadurgam municipality. “Textile industry will be developed and the Rayadurgam government hospital will be developed into a 50 bedded hospital,” he stated.

The Chief Minister was 4 hours behind the schedule. Minister for Civil Supplies Paritala Sunitha, chief whip and Rayadurgam MLA Kalva Sreenivasulu, MLA BK Parthasarathi MP Nimmala Kistappa, district collector Kona Sasidhar and a host of officials were also present.
