Hyderabad: State is all set to have an independent authority on the lines of Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA) to handle the development of infrastructure sector. According to sources, a draft bill to establish Andhra Pradesh Infrastructure Development Authority (APIDA) is under preparation and will be placed before the Cabinet for its approval on September 2.

Senior officials from Industries and Infrastructure Departments were asked to prepare the bill, as the government wanted to introduce the same during the upcoming Assembly session in second week of September. Speaking to The Hans India, a senior official from Industries Department said that the APIDA’s main objective would to promote rapid development of physical and social infrastructure in the State. “As part of this, the new authority will attract private sector participation in designing, financing and construction of infrastructure projects.

CRDA was the nodal agency to deal with all the issues related to the new capital city and the designated area under it. Similarly, the APIDA will act as a nodal agency for all the projects going to be taken up under Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode,” he added.

Currently, the infrastructure and investment activities from conceptualisation to the project delivery are bing handled by the State Infrastructure and Investment Department (SI&ID). On the other hand, the APIA deals with conceptualising and identifying projects to validate their implementation as per the stated objectives of the State’s industrial policy.

These entities have come into existence under Andhra Pradesh Industries Development Enabling Act, 2005 (APIDEA) and Andhra Pradesh Infrastructure Development Enabling Act, 2001 (APIDEA) and notifications of the government from time to time on their functioning.

However, the government feels that these entities could not deliver to their potential in line with the objectives that they have come into existence. Like the CRDA, which had pooled about 33,000 acres of land for the capital, the new entity would handle land acquisition process to meet its requirements.
