Kurnool: Several rivers were overflowing, causeways have been damaged disrupting road transportation due to incessant rains in the district for the past three days. The low lying areas in Nandyal and in various villages at Atmakur, especially those located on the river banks and adjacent to the tank bunds, were inundated with flood waters.
It all started with slight showers, late on Monday night and turned into heavy downpour in a few minutes and continued to lash the district till Tuesday night. The torrential rain started again on Wednesday afternoon and continued till late night throwing normal life out of gear in the district.
According to officials, the district received an average rainfall of 16.3 cm at 50 mandals in the last 24 hours. Atmakur has recorded highest rainfall of 85 mm while Nandyala, Velugodu received 50 and 51 mm and Mahanandi, Sirvella, Bandi Atmakur, Pamulapadu received 42 to 426 mm of rainfall.
Many irrigation tanks and streams in the district were overflowing, while the roads on Atmakur-Jupadubunglow, Mahanandi-Nandyal stretches were badly damaged. The Kundu River flooded the Nandyal town, submerging several residential areas like NTR Colony, Syamakaluva, Srinivasa Nagar, Rajiv Nagar and RTC bus stand.
The residents of Syamakaluva blame the officials of their failure to mitigate flood measures. They said they are facing this situation every year during rainy season. “We have left with no space to sit at least as the house was flooded with rain water, said a resident”. The officials are least bothered to initiate relief measures alleged another resident of Srinivasa Nagar.
The authorities of district administration took up rescue and relief measures on a war-footing basis like shifting of people those living in low lying areas to safer places. They further stated that they are supplying essential commodities to the flood affected people.
Meanwhile, black gram crops cultivated in 700 hectares have been badly affected in Atmakur. “It is not possible to estimate the crop loss as they are submerged in flood water”, said the Assistant Director of Agriculture (ADA) N Salu Reddy. No crop damage has taken place at Nandyal, said Assistant Director of Agriculture N Sudhakar.
The upper land farmers are in full gear seeking to complete paddy harvesting and are gearing up to begin the rabi works. In the district, paddy is being cultivated in nearly two lakh hectares. “The rains boosted the spirit of thousands of paddy farmers in the district and we are expecting a better rabi yield this time”, said a farmer from Nandikotkur.
