Vijayawada: The CPI activists on Monday staged a dharna under the leadership of city committee secretary D Sankar at Ramakirshnapuram demanding the government to prevent encroachments on the banks of Budameru.

The CPI leaders raised slogans against the ruling TDP party and alleged the TDP leaders are encouraging encroachments at Budameru Drain area.

Speaking on the occasion CPI city secretary Sankar alleged that the TDP leaders continue to grab the lands with the support of central MLA B Uma Maheswara Rao.

He said that the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) common sites, canal bunds, park sites and burial grounds were encroached by the TDP leaders.

He added that the followers of legislator were leveling the Budameru drain land to sell it. He also said that the whole work is done under the guidance of central MLA.

He reminded that the city outskirt areas like Singh Nagar and other nearby places face threat from Budameru flood.

The CPI leader said that they held many agitations previously to protect the Budameru drain lands, he said. He blamed the revenue and irrigation departments for neglecting the Budameru due to the pressure of ruling party leaders. CPI leaders P Durga Bhavani, A Ranganayakulu, L Durga Rao, B Rayappa and other leaders participated in the event.
