Atchannaidu blamed the media for deviating his statement. He said that the government would finalise the number of unemployed persons after a thorough survey and will implement its poll promise.

Vijayawada: The statement of Minister for Labour Atchannaidu on allowance to unemployed youth has sparked furore.

A section of media reported that the Minister, after inaugurating his peshi at the interim Secretariat in Amaravati, said that the government was not in a position to pay ‘unemployment allowance’ to the unemployed youth which was the prime TDP poll promise. Members of students’ and youth organisations expressed ire over the Minister following his statement.

However, on Monday, Atchannaidu blamed the media for deviating his statement. He said that the government would finalise the number of unemployed persons after a thorough survey and will implement its poll promise.

Earlier, the media reported quoting the Minister that the government had studied the ‘allowance to unemployed’ in various States where the governments were paying less amount to the unemployed youth. The government was concentrating on creating more jobs to the unemployed and a youth policy would be brought in shortly. He reportedly said a Youth Sub-Plan would be placed before the Chief Minister on the lines of SC Sub Plan. Skill development training is being imparted to the unemployed, he reportedly told the media.

Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) State secretary Surya Rao told The Hans India that the government was dragging the issue without fulfilling the poll promise. The issue would be debated thoroughly at DYFI State committee meeting scheduled to be held here on Tuesday.

AP Student Youth Federation founder-president Navaneetham Sambasiva Rao said the government was dilly-dallying the issue without budget allocation to meet its poll promise.

He pointed out that the government had passed three budgets so far with no allocation to unemployed youth. He said there are 1.45 lakh vacant posts in 159 public sector undertakings in the State.

In addition to this, the government was delaying appointment of constables and DSC teachers. To fulfill the poll promise of giving Rs 2,000 unemployment allowance, the government needs to spend 42,000 crore every year, which is a Herculean task, he said.

The TDP had failed to issue any notification for employment even after two-and-a-half-years of coming to power in the State, he added.
