Vizianagaram: Banks in every village, town and city were thronged by people, who came in large numbers to deposit Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes, which were cancelled from Tuesday midnight.

Most of them were also withdrawing money in Rs 100 denominations for shopping and other denominations to have reserve cash with them. P Sridevi, a customer of IDBI bank, came to the branch to get smaller notes said, “I have been in trouble for the past two days as I don’t have money to purchase groceries and even milk. So, I came here to get the smaller denomination notes. Now, I got Rs 4,000 through exchange and I have deposited the higher valuation currency in the bank. I have completed my work and now relaxed. Nothing to worry just within 20 minutes I have completed my work and going back with smaller denomination notes.”

K Narayana, a chicken shop owner, said: “Thank god, today I can open my shop as the public have some money to purchase chicken. So, today I can earn something.” Dileep Kumar, relationship manager of HDFC Bank, said: “We are making arrangements for exchange of notes. We have enough funds to distribute to the customers.” On the other hand, post offices also faced the same situation as the public rushed there to take notes.
