‘Brazilian media is still relevant in the age of digital technology’

Visakhapatnam: Prof Monica Martinez of Department of Communications and Culture, University of Sorocaba Brazil, comparing the media practices in India and Brazil, said that the Brazilian media was still relevant in the age of digital technology.

Addressing an interactive session jointly organised by the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, AU and Linguistics Research Society here on Sunday, Prof Monica pointed out that mass media particularly newspapers were referred for credibility of news instead of digital and social media.

She informed that Brazil lags behind in usage of Internet whereas the mobile phones became the main source of connectivity and for dissemination of information. “The news coverage in both the countries is similar and mostly the Brazilian media uses native language-Portuguese,” she informed.

Stating that private education was a costly affair in Brazil, she said that schools and colleges in Brazil offer degrees in Portuguese language only.

Prof Monica, working on the Brazilian media said that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi commands huge popularity in abroad particularly in Brazil.
“There is no news in Brazil media about the recent demonetisation move in India,” she added.

Registrar Prof V Umamaheswara Rao felicitated Prof Monica on the occasion and said that AU was interested to take up academic and research collaborations with Brazilian Universities.

Among others, chairman Board of Studies Prof D V R Murthy, assistant professor Dr Challa Ramakrishna, secretary of Linguistics Research Society Krishnaveer Abhishek and others were also present.
