Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu vowed to provide adequate water to tail end lands in the state by renovating all irrigation tanks on a war footing.Speaking at a state-level workshop with engineers, students, farmers and distributor committees, on ‘Neeru-Pragati’ programme here on Saturday, the Chief Minister asserted that water security was one of the top priorities of the government and asked officials to prepare action plan with a time bound manner at state, mandal and village level.
“A comprehensive work is needed to make Neeru-Pragathi programme successful. Water distributor committee chairmen must involve farmers in the programme,” he suggested. He also said it was mandatory to maintain ground water level between three and eight metres in the state.
To achieve this, Naidu said silting in irrigation tanks, jungle clearance in irrigation canals, construction of check dams, ploughing cantour trenches, water harvesting pits and farm ponds have to be taken up as early as possible.Chief Minister said that the government decided to construct 19,931 check dams across the state with a cost of around Rs 600 crores. “Officials should formulate proper plans to complete construction of check dams in next two months.
Water distributor committees should take measures in canal works to ensure water to irrigation tanks through gravity flow. The irrigation tank works should be completed within this year” he directed. He also said engineering colleges would be entrusted with supervision of works. “Engineering students will go to villages and supervise the works as part of practical work. They will be given marks for the practicals” he said.
Chief Minister said that there was a plan to bring at least five lakh acres per year under micro irrigation. Earlier, minister for water resources Devineni Umamaheswara Rao inaugurated the workshop and a live presentation was made on Polavaram irrigation project works to create awareness among farmers. Minister Kollu Ravindra, MLA Tangirala Sowmya were also present.
