The public came to know only when the media personnel and TV cameras swarmed the area shooting pictures.People, who witnessed were awestruck, but there was mixed reactions.

Women in particular appreciated the authorities for punishing the alcoholics in a novel manner, but many were sure these measures who would not stop them from resuming drinking.“This type of men will never change. They will resume drinking soon after this ordeal is over,’’ said 45-year-old Seethalakshmi of Neelam Vepachettu, who lost her husband in a road accident a few years ago. He was alcoholic and rammed his truck to a tree.
A few of them were sympathetic and suggested family counselling instead of giving harsh punishment.Third Metropolitan Magistrate Ch Ramya, apart from imposing a fine of Rs 500 for drunken driving, has asked five persons to man the traffic duties as a punishment.The magistrate, who had taken a serious view on drunken driving, has already sent 30 persons to jail during the last one month.
Those who were given this novel punishment include Sanny Gujaral, P Selot (32), P Suresh (45), K Ravindranath (42) and V Trinadh Teja (22), all residents of the city. She sent two more persons to a three-day jail term.
The magistrate asked the station house officer of Two Town to put them on traffic regulation duties from 9 am to 11 am and 3 pm to 6 pm on Thursday.
This is for the first time such a punishment was being given to the people caught driving under the influence of alcohol.
Appreciating the measure, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police K Mahendra Patrudu said so far 107 motorists were sentenced for drunken driving in 2017 till April end.
Around 35 per cent of convicted drunken motorists are auto drivers in Vizag city. Vizag has won the dubious distinction of recording the maximum number of drunken driving cases in the state. The traffic police registered a total of 19,000 drunken driving cases in 2016 and a fine of Rs 1.36 crore was collected from them.
