Expressing his happiness over VPT being adjudged the second cleanest among 12 major ports in the country as part of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Krishnababu on Sunday said that they have taken number of measures to raise greenery in and around the port, reduce air pollution and many others initiatives to mitigate the pollution levels to make clean and green port, he added.

Speaking on the modernisation and mechanisation of Visakhapatnam Port, the chairman said that they have invested so far Rs 2,500 crore and planning to invest another Rs 2,500 crore over the next two years as part of its modernisation plan, which includes increasing container trade and clean cargo and a few others.

The port, which currently has a capacity to handle 98 million tonnes (MT) of cargo volume, hopes to increase it to 135 MT by 2020, he added.The independent agency, the Quality Council of India (QCI) was appointed by the Ministry of Shipping, has visited all major ports to evaluate implementation of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in various ports duly taking into consideration of various parameters.

Haldia Dock was adjudged the cleanest port award with around 760 points of 1,000 where as Vizag Port has emerged second cleanest port with around 730 points.
