Vijayawada: Vijayawada Municipal Corporation Commissioner J Nivas expressed displeasure over the improper maintenance of night shelters in the city where homeless people take shelter. The commissioner visited a night shelter at Hanumanpet here on Wednesday and was shocked when he saw the unhygienic conditions in rest rooms.

Guide Foundation has been maintaining the night shelters for some years and not providing basic amenities. The commissioner was shocked when he witnessed stinking rest rooms. Toilets, too, are dirty and almost unfit for use.

The commissioner warned the orgnisers and directed to take immediate steps to make the night shelters livable places.
He said new beds and bed sheets, washing machines and other basic amenities should be provided as soon as possible in all night shelters in the city. He said clean bed sheets should be provided every day.

He also suggested to the organisers to provide food to the elderly destitute who were not able to go out. He directed the VMC staff to make repairs to water pipelines, broken floor and paint the walls.
