Visakhapatnam: One of Vizag’s ‘must-visit’ spots for visitors and locals since 1991 has now been confined to memory. Sukh Sagar, a favourite of youngsters for their chai-samosa-cigarette routine over two decades on the Beach Road said “astalavista" (see you later) to the Vizagiites.

  • A favourite of youngsters for their chai-samosa-cigarette routine becomes a hing of the past
  • GVMC demolished it as per the order passed by the High Court
  • Idly Narayana, a worker at Sukh Sagar, says this used to be the best place to hang out for the youth and also known as ‘Vizagiites Adda’
  • No matter what the reason for the demolition be, the locals, who will miss Sukh Sagar, can still find it in Pawan Kalyan’s movie Suswagatham

As part of beautification project, GVMC demolished it as per the order passed by the High Court. Its officials had recently handed out confiscation notice by refusing to extend leases for many shops and outlets at this location. According to GVMC officials, the demolition should have been done during the period of B Ramanjaneyulu when he was GVMC Commissioner but it was stopped due to political pressure and that time has come now.

Notably, this shop was not even touched by the officials during commencement of the mammoth event - the second edition of the International Fleet Review - which was held at Visakhapatnam in the month of February 2016. The last lease renewal was done in 2008 and ended in 2011. Traders resorted to filing petitions to fight the eviction, but to no avail.

Idly Narayana, a worker at Sukh Sagar, said this used to be the best place to hang out for the youth and also known as ‘Vizagiites Adda’. “In fact Sukh Sagar lacks proper seating and hygiene, still it had been the hangout place with my friends in those days”, said Mahesh, a daily jogger on the Beach Road and resident of Jalaripeta.

“No matter what the reason for the demolition be, the locals, who will miss Sukh Sagar, can still find it in Pawan Kalyan’s movie Suswagatham”, he added.

Presently, another favorite spot of drug lovers is Sea View, on the beach side where the charas and nicotine lovers are found mostly. It is located near the parking lot opposite RK Beach which has a wide range of hawkers and food-trucks, but most importantly, was also known as the nicotine lover’s haven.
