Constable Varma was suspended from the duty.

Top sources said owner of the lorry, which was seized by the Gajuwaka police, lodged a complaint with the Commissioner, stating that the constable demanded money for the release, the latter also said that ACP, CI and SI will have a share in the bribe money.

The lorry was seized after its driver Bandaru Kurma Rao was murdered on July 5. Kurma Rao, a resident of Vijayawada, brought a load of sand from Rajahmundry and unloaded at Autonagar.

He slept there in the night. Cleaner of the lorry Chinna Rao attacked him with a rod and killed him on the spot. Prior to his arrest, the lorry was seized by the police.

The owner of the lorry, who happened to be a friend of Commissioner, was perturbed over the demand for bribe and immediately informed him.
