Srikakulam has been upgraded into corporation in December 2015. As a municipal town it was administered under special officer rule from September 2010 to December 2015 and as municipal corporation also it is under special officer rule from December 2015 till date as elections are not conducted for it since December 2015.
After upgrading into corporation, wards were converted into divisions instead of previous 36 wards now 50 divisions have been formed. Caste wise counting of voters was conducted till end of this year April in 50 divisions and final list was published in May this year.
Later, the government kept mum for some time on conducting elections. Out of total 50 divisions, 12 were allotted for general category, 15 for general women, 17 reserved for backward classes, five for scheduled castes and one for scheduled tribes. With the declaration of reservations, the ruling TDP, YSRCP, BJP and Congress leaders were trying to attract the people in their respective divisions.
