  • This harsh move forced liquor syndicates to abnormally increase the prices liquor at belt shops in villages

“We never expected the TDP government immediately take such a decision. Many families were ruined due to establishment of belt shops in the state. I hope that this decision will lead to total ban on liquor in the coming days.

Women folk will remain indebted to the Chief Minister totally,” said R Rajamma, who is protesting to remove belt shops at Madhavaram village in Siddavatam mandal recently. “Though there is political benefit behind the issue of banning belt shops, it will be a welcome decision as most families especially poor get benefitted.

During the electioneering, the Chief Minister promised over the eradication of belt shops, now he is implementing it. We must appreciate him for his initiation,” said YV Subba Rao, a social activist of Kadapa city.

Meanwhile, the unexpected decision of the government turned major blow to liquor syndicates. With this move, the poor boozers are at the receiving end as liquor syndicates have abnormally increased the prices of belt shops in villages and started selling at price much higher than the minimum support price.

Though the Excise officials aware of liquor sale at higher price, they are forced to keep quiet as the syndicates helping the government to get more revenue through auctions. The excise auctions fetched Rs 300 crore this year.

After auctions for permits, the liquor traders are forming syndicates in conducting auctions unofficially for belt shops with the influence of politicians. It is interesting to note the liquor syndicates which successfully completed the unofficial auction of belt shops, fixed prices of different brands of liquor which are Rs 10 to Rs 30 more than MRP.

For instance, a Bagpiper quarter bottle is sold in belt shop at Rs 75 against the MRP of Rs 59. Similarly, MC brandy quarter bottle costs Rs 100 against the MRP of Rs 82. For MC whisky, Rs 115 is charged against MRP of Rs 88.

The liquor syndicates are also offering incentives and gifts to lure boozers. The belt shop owners have pinned their hopes on securing good profits in coming quarters. However, the Excise officials told they would ensure immediate implementation of the government orders.
