Amaravati: The state government speeded up the Purushottapatnam Lift Irrigation Scheme (PPLIS) works to supply Godavari water to East Godavari and Visakhapatnam district through Polavaram left main canal. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is going to inspect the progress of Purushottapatnam LI scheme works on Monday as a target was set to complete the works by August 15.
Polavaram Left Main Canal (LMC) was contemplated to create an irrigation potential of four lakh acres in East Godavari and Visakhapatnam districts and to divert 23.44 tmc ft of water to Visakhapatnam city for domestic and industrial needs.
As every year during floods lakhs of cusecs of water is going waste into the sea, the government planned to utilise the flood water of River Godavari. A lift irrigation scheme has been proposed near Purushottapatnam village in Seethanagaram mandal of East Godavari district to get the early benefits of the Polavaram left main canal.
The state government accorded administrative approval for this project through a GO on October 14, 2016 and allocated Rs 1638 crore.
In Stage I it is proposed to lift 3,500 cusecs of water from Godavari at Purushottapatnam during flood days from +14.00 metre to +40.54 metre and to drop into Polavaram Irrigation Project Left Main canal at km 1.600 by providing 10 vertical turbine pumps of each 10 cusecs capacity through MS pressure main in five rows of each 10.10 km length.
The power requirement is estimated as 57 megawatt. In the second stage, it is proposed to lift 1,400 cusecs of water from Polavaram Irrigation Project Left Main Canal at km 50 during flood days and to drop into Yeleru reservoir with a total head of 60 metre by providing eight vertical turbine pumps of each five cusecs capacity through MS pressure main in two rows of each 13.12 km length. The power requirement is estimated at 35.36 megawatt.
It is proposed to supply water to a total extent of 2.15 lakh acres under Polavaram Irrigation Project Left Main Canal, Yeleru reservoir and Pithapuram Branch Canal during contingency besides providing water for industrial and domestic needs of Visakhapatnam city duly utilising the existing Left Main Canal infrastructure.
The irrigation officials are making efforts to complete the works as per schedule despite of continuous rainfall.
