Vijayawada: Krishnashtami and Independence Day holidays preceded by Sunday have resulted in many travel plans for employees and others. But their plight to catch a bus or train to reach destination is horrendous considering the long wait at railway and bus stations in the city. The holidays proved hard to cope with for general travellers who were seen sleeping on platforms at railway and bus stations as all berths and seats were reserved.
The suffering of travellers started since Saturday even though both the RTC and Railways made their own arrangements to ease passenger rush. While the RTC is running special buses, the Railways has provided extra compartments to existing services. In spite of these arrangements woes of travellers continued for third consecutive day on Monday.
Vijayawada is temporary capital and important railway junction in South India. As a result, RTC and Railways have been operating many services to safely send travellers to their respective destinations.
Pandit Nehru Bus Station (PNBS), which is considered the biggest in the state, is flooded with passengers who are in a hurry to catch the correct bus. “Many passengers have been finding difficulty in getting reservation for places like Hyderabad, Rajahmundry and Tirupati,” said N Sikhamani, a frequent bus traveller between Eluru and Hyderabad.
The tickets of all services towards these destinations have already sold out. “We are arranging special buses on a daily basis,” an RTC official said. They operated 50 special services on intervening night of August 11-12. They arranged 26 special services to Rajamahendravaram, seven to Visakhapatnam, nine to Hyderabad besides other specials to various places.
On August 12-13, they readied 106 services. They arranged 44 buses to various destinations on August 13-14. For Hyderabad, 29 services were earmarked, 11 for Rajamahendravaram and others to various places. “The charges of special services are 50 percent more than regular fares.
