Women workers outnumber men in the district in Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) works.  Out of 5,12, 983 workers, 3,18,947 are women and 1, 94, 036 are men in the district. Total families depending on the MGNREGS are 3,45,702.

Srikakulam: Women workers outnumber men in the district in Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) works. Out of 5,12, 983 workers, 3,18,947 are women and 1, 94, 036 are men in the district. Total families depending on the MGNREGS are 3,45,702.

In the current financial year from April to June 2018 Rs 236.9 crore funds were spent for wages of workers and another Rs 28.19 crore for material components. With this expenditure, Srikakulam district achieved third place in the state in MGNREGS works while Prakasam and Vizianagaram stood in first and second positions respectively.

MGNREGS works covered in all 1,096 grama panchayats and 4,357 habitations in the district and all eligible are getting job cards under the scheme. “We are expanding MGNREGS works for agriculture, housing, sericulture, fisheries, horticulture, drains, animal husbandry, social forest, gravel roads, grama panchayat buildings works and CC roads to provide work to more workers in order to arrest migrations from the district”, District Water Resources Management Agency (DWMA) project director Hanumanthu Kurma Rao told The Hans India. DWMA is the nodal agency in implementation of MGNREGS works at district-level.
