Ongole: The prisons department has opened the first petrol bunks at district jail in Ongole on Thursday. Prisons IG G Jayavardhan inaugurated the petrol bunk in the presence of Indian Oil Corporation chief general manager DV Ramana Rao.

The petrol bunk run by the prisons department, which requires 13 employees, will employ five prisoners serving life term but has modest behaviour for the past few years.

After the inauguration, Jayavardhan said that the prisons department has already set up petrol bunks run by the prisoners at Kadapa, Rajahmahendravaram and Anantapur central jails, but this is the first at the district jail.

He announced that Tamil Nadu and Gujarat are drawing inspiration from the methods being followed by the Andhra Pradesh prisons department to bring change in the prisoners and other welfare activities.

He expected that the petrol bunk will sell about 80,000 litres of diesel and 90,000 litres of petrol due to its prime location and provide Rs 4.5 to 5 lakhs of revenue to the department. He said that every rupee earned by the department from various prisoner units, will be used for the welfare of the inmates in various jails.

Ramana Rao said that the fourth petrol bunk in association with the prisons department will also achieve good sales and asked the people to encourage the petrol bunk as the money will be used for the prisoners. The DIG of Prisons I Srinivasa Rao, district jail superintendent Prakash and other officials from the prisons and IOC also participated in the programme.
