Vijayawada: Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is one of the important reasons behind infertility and it could be corrected with physiotherapy and physical exercise, says physiotherapist Dr Sudeepti Vardhan.

Addressing a health education programme on PCOS and role of physiotherapy at Vasavya Nursing Home here on Saturday, Dr Sudeepti said that hormone deficiency and obesity play a vital role in PCOS and with the change of lifestyle and physical exercise it could be corrected. At least 10 per cent of girls experience PCOS during the adolescent stage with symptoms like obesity, hormone deficiency, irregular menstrual cycles and unwanted hair, she said.

Particularly, due to insulin resistance in obesity, the girls might be affected by diabetes, she said and added that physical exercise, limited intake of food play an important role in managing PCOS. Physiotherapy coupled with physical exercise would help reduce obesity and correct hormonal imbalance, she said and added that with the controlling of obesity, ovum release would become regular resulting in pregnancy.
