Visakhapatnam to host beach volleyball tourney

Visakhapatnam: Highly rated men and women teams will be seen in the first ever Federation International de Volleyball (FIVB) beach volleyball world tour event at the RK Beach from January 17 to 20, 2019.
The Port City gets the chance to host the major event despite competition from coastal states in the country. While Kolkata-based Leisure Sports Management is the promoter of the event, FIVB and Volleyball Federation of India (VFI) and its affiliate Andhra Pradesh Volleyball Association (APVA) extended their technical support and expertise for the event.
The four-day beach volleyball event will see 56 leading teams-28 each in men’s and women’s section from across the globe will vie for honours, said President of APVA and Visakhapatnam West MLA PGVR Naidu (Ganna Babu).
Volleyball is popular in Visakhapatnam and twin Godavari districts. The city had hosted Volleyball World Championship in 2005 and therefore the beach edition of exciting sport has even larger followers throughout the coastal belt of Andhra Pradesh, Gana Babu added.
The APVA thanked the VFI and others for choosing Visakhapatnam as the venue, said District Collector Pravin Kumar. Managing Director of Leisure Sports Management SS Dasgupta said that the tournament, an event of the international parent body FIVB, would be telecast live by a leading sports network in India.
