The Toyota Camry hybrid and Ciaz SHVS owe a chunk of their sales successes to the FAME scheme. It’s only a matter of time before other manufacturers like Honda, Nissan and Hyundai join the hybrid electric bandwagon.
Autocar India reports that Hyundai is considering the new Ioniq plug-in hybrid variant for India. If the car gets a green signal, it could be here as early as 2017.
The Ioniq is based on Hyundai zero-emission platform and is the first production vehicle to be available in hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric configurations. The plug-in hybrid variant will have a pure-electric range of over 50 km.
The powertrain comprises a 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine which produces 105 PS and 147 Nm of torque and an electric motor which is capable of around 60 PS. The combo is paired to a 6-speed dual-clucth automatic transmission. The electric motor derives its juice from a 8.9 Kwh lithium-ion polymer battery.
With a new design language inside out and high aerodynamic efficiency (0.24 Cd), the Hyundai Ioniq will be pitted against the Toyota Prius in international markets. In India, it would be positioned as a niche premium offering.
