Slated to come to India sometime in 2018, the next generation Suzuki WagonR and WagonR Stingray have been officially launched in Japan. The new generation twins come with a host of changes to be seen in its exterior and interiors. Bolder in design and sportier in its stance, the 2017 Suzuki WagonR borrows inspiration from large American SUVs. Photos reveal split headlamps, a massive two part grille and new front bumper design.
Based on new generation HEARTECT platform, both, the new WagonR and the WagonR Stingray share this new platform with the new generation Swift, which will be launched in India later this year. The new WagonR twins are 3395 mm long, 1475 mm wide, and 1650 mm tall. They sit on a wheelbase of 2460 mm.
Design
On the sides, bold design elements are evident while body colored B pillar is seen to distinguish the front and rear passenger segments. 2017 Suzuki WagonR also receives rear mirror placed on the door as against its positioning on the pillar as was seen in its earlier counterpart while there are flared fenders and prominent body line that runs across the length to the lower edge. At the rear, the new Suzuki WagonR receives styling as seen on the Japanese spec Alto with tail lamps located lower down but just above the rear bumper.
2017 Suzuki WagonR Stingray on the other hand boasts of a sportier stance with a one piece front grille, vertical headlamps and differently styled bumpers. It gets an extended hood, sportier body kit and large alloy wheels. The new Stingray is based on Suzuki’s TECT body technology which makes it lighter than its earlier counterpart resulting in better performance and higher fuel economy.
Engine
In Japan, the new WagonR is offered in three trims – FA, Hybrid FX and Hybrid FZ. The base is powered by a R06A 0.66-litre 3 cylinder petrol engine generating 52 PS at 6,500 rpm and 60 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. It also gets a hybrid option, which is powered by the same engine along with a WA05A electric motor. This e motor adds 3.1 PS of power 50 Nm of torque to the overall output.
Stingray shares the same engine options as above, except for the top-end variant. Stingray Topend variant is powered a turbocharged version of the same 0.66 liter petrol engine that delivers 64 PS at 6,000 rpm and 98 Nm of torque at 3,000 rpm.
In India, one can expect the 2017 Maruti Suzuki WagonR interiors to be similar to that of the new Ignis, simple yet feature-rich. Top-end variants could get 7 inch touchscreen with SmartPlay infotainment system which is also compatible with Android Auto and Apple Car Play. Engine options on offer could be the same 1.0 liter K10 petrol which also powers the current WagonR. It is offered with 5 speed MT as well as AMT.
Price
Price of the new Suzuki WagonR in Japan starts from JPY 10,78,920 (INR 6.44 lakh) for the base variant while the top-end variant costs JPY 12,93,840 (INR 7.72 lakh). Expect the car to be launched in India later this year, or in 2018.
