Hyderabad: In a development that could give further boost to the aspirations of Telangana government to make the State as a hub for manufacturing of mobile handsets, Chennai-based Micromax is gearing up to set up its maiden plant with an investment of Rs 80 crore on the city outskirts.

The plant which will come up on a 36-acre site at electronics cluster near Ravirala in Maheswaram mandal of Ranga Reddy district is estimated to generate employment opportunities for about 1,250 people. “We have made tentative allocation of 36 acres of land for the company at the electronics cluster. The land will cost anywhere between Rs 12 to 15 crore.

The company will make Rs 80 crore investment in the first phase,” E Venkata Narsimha Reddy, Vice Chairman and MD, Telangana State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation Limited (TSIIC) told The Hans India. Micromax, the country’s second largest smartphone player, received approvals for the plant under single window clearance system or TS-IPASS. Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao handed over the letter to the company management on Wednesday.

This new facility is the second mobile manufacturing plant to come Telangana’s way after city-based Celkon Mobiles established its plant at Medchal last month. Set up with an investment of around Rs 200 crore, the Celkon plant has four assembly lines that can cumulatively churn out 2 lakh units a month. The capacity can be expanded to five lakh units per month.
