At 9.15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was down 41.18 points, or 0.23 percent, from Thursday at 18,141.21, Xinhua news agency reported.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange shed 2.51 points, or 0.17 percent, at 1,472.47.

Decliners were led by information and communication, glass and ceramics, and foods.
