saftyTirupati: Regional Fire Officer (fire protection wing-Tirupati Municipal Corporation) SV Choudhary kick started the 'Fire Safety Awareness week' here on Sunday at the fire service department office. The safety week will continue till April 20. The fire service employees explained to the students and local people about causes of fire in houses, commercial establishments, hotels, schools and elsewhere through demonstration and also told about the techniques in controlling/containing the fire. Regional Fire Officer also distributed leaflets to students about fire accidents and preventive measures. Speaking on this occasion, he said that the gas leakage and electric short circuit are the major causes for fire accidents and by taking a few preventive measures these can be avoided. Fire service employees made a mock drill of fire accidents and the measures to control them by using fire extinguishers. They released the gas in an open place and ignited it. Immediately, a few fire staff doused the fire with fire extinguishers. The fire staff explained to the students about the basic training in operating the fire extinguishers, which would be helpful in an emergency. Tirupati Fire Officer Ramanaiah showed several devices that are used in fire fighting and explained the functioning of the equipment. He also explained about the major threat from leakage of cooking gas, which can be prevented by taking precautions. He also told them about the severity of fire with gas leakage. He suggested them to keep the windows of the kitchens open always and close the regulator after cooking. On second day, Monday, fire staff will conduct demonstrations at RTC Bus Station and railway station followed by residential colonies, commercial streets, schools, hospitals and hotels. The week-long awareness campaign will end on April 20.
