The year that brought so much also took away. That is life. The world of our cinema would be poorer by the absence of cinematographers Jagdish Mali and Bobby Singh. Actors who left us were the extremely successful Pran, the record holding Jagdish Raj and the aspiring star Jiah Khan. Greats whose melodies were always remain with us: Shamshad Begum and Manna Dey. Death snatched very early the budding singer Sandeep Acharya and the extremely talented Rituparno Ghosh.
The two major controversies of the year: the alleged involvement of Sooraj Pancholi in the suicide of actor Jiah Khan and as the year comes to a close the sad parting of Hrithik Roshan and his wife for 13 years Sussanne. Ranbir’s holiday with his rumoured girlfriend Katrina Kaif in Spain also hit the headlines for various reasons. The year also witnessed cash registers ringing as ‘Chennai Express’ and ‘Krrish 3’ set new benchmarks to be surpassed. However, going by the way the new instalment of ‘Dhoom’ has opened, it remains to be seen whether it will be the first Indian film to make it to the Rs 300 crore club.
The year will also be remembered as the year of sequels that include ‘Aashiqui 2’, ‘Grand Masti’, ‘Krrish 3’, ‘Murder 3’, ‘Once Upon a Time in Mumbai Dobaara’, ‘Race 2’, ‘Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns’, ‘Shootout at Wadala’, ‘Satya 2’, ‘Yamla Pagla Deewana 2’ and ‘Dhoom: 3’ etc.
