Mumbai: Veteran Bollywood actor Farooq Sheikh, 65, died of cardiac arrest in Dubai on Friday late night. He is survived by wife Rupa and daughters Shaista and Sanaa.

With his boy-next-door persona and understated style, Farooq made his entry into films at a time when the parallel art cinema was making its presence felt and he went on to work in some of the best movies of that era. He started his career in Bollywood in 1973 with ‘Garam Hawa’ and is best remembered for his performances in films like ‘Shatranj Ke Khiladi’, ‘Chashme Buddoor’, ‘Noorie’ and ‘Umrao Jaan’.

He was best known for his work in Hindi films from 1977 to 1989 and for his work in television between 1988 and 2002. He returned to acting in films in 2008. His major contribution was in parallel cinema with directors like Satyajit Ray, Muzaffar Ali, Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Ketan Mehta.

His last film was ‘Club 60’ and before that he was seen playing the role of a father to Ranbir Kapoor in ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’. He had acted in many serials and shows on television and performed on stage in famous productions such as ‘Tumhari Amrita’ and presented the TV show, ‘Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai’. He won the 2010 National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for ‘Lahore’.
