The name Swetha Basu Prasad didn't ring a bell until the Hyderabad police busted a high profile prostitution racket at a 5-star hotel in the posh Banjara Hills locality. However, the round ever-smiling pictures of her on the net is sure give you a familiar inkling. Her expressive face reveals more than required.
Here's a brief synopsis on a national award winning actress' rise and fall from grace. Shwetha Basu Prasad shares her birth day with Rahul Dravid who's known as the gentleman of Indian cricket except that this not so gentle woman was born years later. Shweta was born in Jamshedpur on 11 January 1991. Her mother is a Bengali while father is a Bihari. The family moved to Mumbai where Swetha did her schooling. She was a student of RN Podar High School.
Shwetha made her screen debut as a child artiste at the age of 11. Her impressive performance opposite seasoned artistes like Shabana Azmi in Makdee did not go unnoticed. She won the National Film Award in the Best Child Artiste category.
Shweta was flooded with offers post Makdee. She was next seen in Iqbal for which she was nominated for a Filmfare in the Best Supporting actress category. Her career slumped thereafter with movies like Vaah Life Ho Toh Aisi and Darna Zaroori Hai. After she vanished from Bollywood, Shweta made a comeback in Tollywood in the role of a lead actress in Kotha Bangaru Lokam which went on to become a hit.
She was paired opposite debutant Varun Sandesh. Swetha was also seen in the Bengali movie Ek Nadir Galpo which also featured Mithun Chakraborty and Jisshu Sengupta. However, the movie was declared a box office dud. She was also seen in a forgettable Tamil movie titled Ra Ra.
Swetha tried her luck in Telugu movies again. She was seen in Kasko, Kalavar King, Priyudu and Nuvvekkadunte Nenakkadunta. However, the actress could hardly make money from these these films as they were all small-budget movies.
The latest we heard was when her name cropped up during a flesh trade operation conducted by the Hyderabad police. The actress was picked up along with her pimp Balu.
What shocked everyone was Shweta's candid admission that she did make wrong career choices to support her family. She had huge financial commitments to fulfill and with a dead end in movies, she chose prostitution to make some quick bucks easily.
The actress is currently lodged at a rehabilitation centre in Hyderabad. Surprisingly, the actress received a lot of support from women on the social media who poured in their sympathy towards her plight. One Bollywood film-maker even offered her a role. This is where it stands now.
