Reacting to Sridevi’s claims that he is using her name to gain mileage for his forthcoming production ‘Sridevi’ and that she hasn’t given her consent to the film’s title, controversial filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma said the film has nothing to do with his obsession with Sridevi who was once the face of Tollywood. “My film ‘Sridevi’ is a story about a teenager's infatuation towards a 25-year-old woman, a subject matter dealt in films such as ‘Malena’, ‘Cinema Paradiso’,’ Summer of 42’ and ‘Mera Naam Joker’ earlier. In the film, neither is the woman playing the title role as an actress nor is the boy a director. Also there's a huge age difference between the boy and woman in the film, which is not the case with me and the real Sridevi,” said Varma.

The filmmaker added that the title has been given to him by AP Film Chamber Of Commerce, the authorised body for such deeds. “Films with title ‘Sridevi’ have been made and released at least three times in the last two decades,” he stated. To begin with Varma has titled his film as ‘Savithri’ but as fellow producer Neelima Tirumalasetti (‘Panjaa’ fame) protested stating that she has already registered the same title for her forthcoming with Nara Rohit few months back, he had to alter it to ‘Sridevi.’

Varma also said that as opposed to Sridevi’s claims, he has indeed spoken to her producer husband Boney Kapoor on phone before leaving a detailed explanation on Whatsapp messenger. “I’m deeply hurt by this action of Sridevi whom I always admired and respected and I strongly believe that she was influenced by others with vested interests,” he said and added, “I am going ahead with the title ‘Sridevi’ because I am well within my legal and moral rights to use it, legal because a name cannot be copyrighted.”

On a concluding note he said he can never demean Sridevi. “I know in my heart that I will never do anything to degrade or demean Sridevi and the final outcome of my film will prove that.” Wonder how Sridevi will react to this!
