Many critics and viewers alike, have complained of the poor quality of Roy, the new Ranbir Kapoor, Jacqueline Fernandez and Arjun Rampal film. Why, some ask, would an actor, of such renown as Ranbir Kapoor commit to making such a shoddy, poorly written film? There is a surprising reason why he did this.

The film Roy is not a recent idea, despite appearances and the media impression, created by the T-series/Freeway Pictures team. It has its origins as long as 11 or 12 years ago, when Ranbir Kapoor and Jacqueline Fernandez were very young and had not yet established their names. It is then that they committed to the film – before they even understood the importance of quality in their choices.

Roy is a very mysterious project – and the true tale of the project’s history, is far more interesting than the film itself. It began life, rather bizarrely, as what appeared to be an unprecedented memory experiment conducted repeatedly, on Langkawi Island, as early as 2003 or so. (It is difficult to pinpoint the exact year, over this time). In this experiment, the auction scene and the party scene, beneath tents were repeated several times. At this distance in time, it is difficult for the witness (Valentine Cawley), who played the auctioneer, to recall the number of times it repeated, but it was at least four times in total, over the years, with a fifth time that was cancelled, on the morning of the shoot, after Valentine had travelled to Langkawi, from Singapore.

Firstly, it will be explained what was done. Then it will be discussed why.

The auction scene and the party scene beneath tents were improvised, in the first instance. There was no script. Valentine Cawley made up his lines. So the first time these were run, they were spontaneously generated. Some time later, the scenes were repeated (on another occasion…these repeats stretch over about 11 years). In the repeats, Valentine was expected to generate the same lines – and he did so, automatically, from unconscious memory, since he was gifted, from childhood, with a very retentive mind. What was odd about the party scene was that the scene was reversed the second time around: that is in each conversation, (which may not have ended up in the final film) the person speaking to Valentine spoke in his original lines, from the first instance of the party scene. In response, rather oddly, Valentine spoke the original lines of the other party, from the previous performance of the party scene. In this manner, the whole thing appeared to be a kind of experiment in long term memory recall – and the ability to therefore reverse a performance – and take the other person’s role, in an alternating manner.

What is being tested here is simple: can someone learn, at first hearing, both sides of a conversation and be able to play back either side, again, upon cue, over a space of years, without prior notice that it would ever be repeated? The answer was yes, he could.

These performances and reversal of performances occurred at least four times, with the last performance being in 2014 – up to a full 11 years after the first.

Now, Ranbir Kapoor and Jacqueline Fernandez were present at the first performance of these scenes in 2003 or so. At this time, neither of them was known. So they committed to Roy, before there even was a complete script: it was just a couple of repeated scenes, conducted as part of what seemed to be an experiment. So, in a way, Ranbir Kapoor and Jacqueline Fernandez cannot be blamed for committing to a poor quality film – because they did so at a time when neither really had a career to speak of. They were at the beginning of their careers.

Why would anyone do such a strange experiment? It can only be speculated as to the motive – but it should be noted that Valentine Cawley is no ordinary actor: he is the father of Ainan Celeste Cawley, an omnibus child prodigy, hailed at the age of 8, as “the world’s cleverest child”, by the world’s media. Perhaps, someone had taken an interest in the mental abilities of this particular family and sought to investigate them. It is unclear what other reason there might be for doing this, though, of course, such reasons might exist, but be unknown, except to the organizers.

Ranbir Kapoor has placed his reputation at risk, by doing Roy. It is very clear that there must be a hidden reason why he would take on this poorly executed project: the fact is, he committed to it, long before he had a viable career – and that is why.

Should Kapoor, or Fernandez be asked about their involvement in this experiment they may choose to lie – but it should be noted that there were many witnesses there – perhaps a hundred people on the day for the party scene. If they lie, and deny what happened, it will come back to haunt them, one day, when others speak out about it too. So it would be foolish for them to do so. If they are wise they will either confirm the story – or refuse to comment. If they deny it, other witnesses can be provided as to the reality of these events.

I know this situation might seem unbelievable. But it is the truth. Ask yourself this: why would anyone write to you, about this, unless it were true?

There is clearly much more to Roy, than just a badly made film. There are many people who could attest to this, if necessary (such as the agents and many talents involved on the repeated scenes of this production…of which there are, perhaps, a hundred people). The big question is: why did they do this? This is something which deserves to be investigated…or at least brought out into the open. This is a mystery which should be solved.
