Chiru’s 150th: The story behind the story. First it was Ram Charan. Then it was Puri Jagannadh. And BVS Ravi followed. It seemed to be a strategic move by the makers of Chiru’s 150th flick on Tuesday as they echoed a similar statement that Puri is the writer.
Though everybody is aware of the fact that BVS Ravi has written Chiru’s 150th, it came as shock to many when Ram Charan on Tuesday announced that Puri Jagannadh is the writer. Hans Talkies takes a look at what went wrong.
First it was Ram Charan. Then it was Puri Jagannadh. And BVS Ravi followed. It seemed to be a strategic move by the makers of Chiru’s 150th flick on Tuesday as they echoed a similar statement that Puri is the writer.
This came as a surprise to many as writer BVS on Monday tweeted, “Super excited, highly emotional 2 get d nod from #Megastar n its my most fav director @purijagan produced by #Ramcharan #Chiru150 (sic).” His statement was a clear indication that he had penned Chiru’s 150th. And it’s no secret that he has been travelling with the actor-turned-politician for long.
But what went wrong suddenly? There’s apparently a story behind it. After US-based writer Dev Varma claimed that the story BVS Ravi narrated to Chiru was his body of work, Charan and co. decided that this is not the way to flag off Chiru’s landmark film. A source points out, “There were two versions of the script – one conceived by Puri and the other by Ravi.
The latter’s draft had a pre-independence era story which was vital to the film and it was this portion that Chiru was kicked about and Dev had a problem with. Puri wanted to make a film by entwining both the versions. However, with Dev’s remarks coming to fore, he went back to the drawing board and began working on extending his version.”
The source adds, “Though writer Gopi Mohan stated that Dev can approach the Writer’s Union if his script has been copied, the thing is Chiru’s film’s script is yet to be registered.” We now hear that the flick will not have any semblances to Dev’s script. “It’s a moral victory for Dev. As soon as he got a confirmation that it won’t have any period setup, he heaved a mighty sigh of relief.
He has briefed the situation to Gopikrishna Movies (owned by Krishnam Raju) who spent Rs 1 crore on the script, including paying Rs 15 lakh for Gopi Mohan’s inputs, when it was being developed. It is likely that the script, ‘Okka Adugu’, will be translated into visuals soon,” a source close to Dev confirms.
