CHAMBER POLLS

Over 300 small film producers have decided to back members from Telangana in the forthcoming elections to Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce

Hyderabad: Telangana filmmakers finally seem to have got an edge over their Andhra Pradesh counterparts, with over 300 small producers reportedly offering to support them in the elections for 44-member committee and 97 posts in producer, studio, distribution and exhibitor sectors in Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce.

The elections are scheduled to be held on July 19. Initially, the chamber, dominated by Andhra-born film fraternity was said to have worked out a ‘compromise formula’ with Telangana filmmakers who demanded posts in 48:52 ratio.

However, in the last moment, they backed out and more than 40 to 50 Telangana filmmakers jumped into the fray for different posts. “We wanted to work together and sought appropriate representation for the Telangana film fraternity, but they backed out and forced a contest.

All our members will come under one panel with a slogan ‘Mana Rashtram-Mana Panel’ inspired by Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao’s slogan ‘Mana Rashtam Mana Palana,” said studio-owner and film producer Sana Yadi Reddy, who has now become a rallying point for 300-odd small filmmakers who oppose the alleged hegemony of four lessees, who hold nearly 400 theatres under their grip and dictate terms in the industry.

With support of bigwigs like Adiseshagiri Rao, Dasari Narayana Rao and Venkatagiri, small producers, exhibitors, distributors and studio owners now want to break free from the monopoly of four to five lessees.

“We are against Suresh Babu, Sunil Narang and other lessees who are having control over majority of theatres. Out of 1,000 producers, 850 are small film producers who have been suffering in their hands for years,” said producer Nattikumar, a contestant. “We don’t mind supporting Telangana panel since hundreds of small producers want to get out of this lessee stranglehold and breathe free,” he added.
