EXPERIENCE OF A KIND

Film industry differs over new idea, receives support from Minister

  • A section of filmdom feels that these cinema halls will not give best viewing experience because of reduced screen size
  • It is, however, disputed that reduced screen size and also fewer seats give stereo effect because of compactness

Hyderabad: The novel concept of building 3,000-and-odd mini theatres in mandal headquarters is most likely to become a reality with the Minister for Cinematography Srinivas Yadav pledging his support to it.

But will these theatres offer proper viewing experience to the satisfaction of audience after shelling out Rs 50 a ticket. Since existing single and multiplex theatres are providing big screen experience supported by best acoustics to make film-viewing enjoyable to the cinemagoer.

“Although, we welcome the mini theatres, but we are not sure about the screen size in these mini theatres and how it would satisfy a viewer. Actually, existing theatre have screen size varying between 50 feet and 100 feet, and Imax has 130 feet screen.

Mini theatres with screen size equivalent to an extended home video are bound to undermine the viewing experience,” felt director Teja, who also owns a theatre in Vizag. “We charge Rs 75 a ticket, whereas mini theatre is proposing only Rs 50 a ticket, so we may not lose a big chunk of viewers.

With expected earning of Rs 7,500 per show (Rs 50 for 150 seats in a theatre), it would be difficult to meet the maintenance cost,” he added. However, producer Allani Sridhar supported the idea of mini theatres at mandal headquarters.

“Our theatres will have regular screen size ranging from 50 to 100 feet. We are reducing the capacity from 1,000 seats to 100 seats but screen size, acoustics and ambience will be much better than existing theatres.

It’s like listening to a stereo in a car which gives us maximum effect due to its compactness. On cost cutting, each theatre will employ two persons, one person will be manager-cum-booking clerk and one technician and with subsidies from government, we can meet the maintenance cost,” he felt.
