Kapil Sharma has come a long way from theatre acting to being a popular stand-up comedian. Being known both nationally as well Internationally Kapil feels he could make it only through his hard work.
Thus his advice to the new upcoming talents, "Go ahead and work hard. Make your own place do not try mean tactics to achieve popularity. Work simply and sincerely with the recognition of your work, you will make a place for yourself and will be here to stay. Pick up your mobile phone-shoot yourself and put it on YouTube. If you are talented enough, God will definitely give you a chance. I am planning to give such platforms to new comers soon.”
Kapil excitedly says, "I do not know how come I have got this trait of humor in me. My whole family is very humorously inclined. The family’s upbringing itself has funny bones within themselves. I am sure this is an inborn trait in me. No one was serious in bringing me into this world but I am here," he gushes on a funny note.
On conceptualizing his own show, Kapil says, "I am the creative director of my show but we sit down and discuss as a whole team. Also, we do not work as the corporates do. We all scot on the grounds, start off with our gags, which is decided earlier. My team works in a natural process, some of them you will find sitting down hogging dal chawal while some will be lying on the sofas or the ground. This natural process helps us get our funny bones tickle naturally and the gags that we prepare are the outcome of the teams’ funny patterns of existence. Indeed no research work goes into conceptualizing our jokes. Yes! But we take care that we don’t make “below the belt” jokes".
About his journey, Kapil expresses his gratitude, "My journey had started way back in 1997. I never expected to reach this position. I would be participating in serious theater then. I also performed on the regional channels. My first stand-up comedy show with Siddhu paaji that was telecast on Doordarshan. I realized my strength in Comedy Circus. But slowly and gradually I realized that stand-up comedy is my forte.”
On not liking association with below the belt kinda jokes and his role in the film KKKPK, he says, "I never was inclined to be associated with jokes termed as, “Below the belt.” Thus I started my own comedy show. Today I am playing the main lead in, "Kis Kis ko Pyar Karun” which really shows where I have reached. My journey has been very fruitful. I am more than happy that people like me the way I am and I have portrayed myself in the film. The film is significant to me as I am playing myself. Like in real I cannot say no to anyone, in the similar manner situations force me to say yes to all these three women. I get married to three women in the film and then what happens forms the crux of the story.”
On being quizzed about the Archana Puran Singh show he is a part of that has below the belt jokes, Kapil states, “Actually, my jokes would be clean and neat. I do understand “mere saafsuthre jokes yadi 10-minute kehotehoge to bakigande jokes us par bharipadte hai. So as I said earlier, I was keen on starting my own show. I always wanted to have a show in which every guest of mine would feel comfortable. Take the instance of Dharmji and Amitabh Bachchan I also try to ask some unheard stories about them which the audiences are keen to hear. Therefore, the show became popular.”
Inspiration from the audience, he informs, "I do get inspiration from the audiences too. Many a times I have come across so many funny people from within my audiences only and have picked up a leaf or two from their persona and behavior. I like to do mastimazak but do not like to have below the belt jokes at all.”
Kapil has had his share of puppy love as he explains, "I remember we would not have any fans in our class rooms. But when we went to the computer room it had central AC. The atmosphere was like Switzerland and the Computer teacher was also good looking. I fell in love with her. You may call it a crush but I stared loving her really. She must be married now.”
About his own marriage, Kapil adds, "That’s the million dollar question. I have not yet decided as to when will I get married. But after reading this in the news papers, my mom will again start asking me the same question.”
All praise for the simplicity of his mother, Kapil says, "My mother always sits in every show of mine. But she is so simple she would always like to wear the same dress. I had to make her understand that you are a guest in the show so you have to wear different dress every day. She would retaliate and says, "Oh! My God you also never repeat your same attire but isn’t that a waste of money??"
About Sunil Grover [Gutthi], he says sarcastically, "Meine kahanmanaya use …woh kudh hi ghumfirke mere paas aa gaya. [I did not call him back he himself came after his own rendezvous]. Actually, Sunil wanted to make his own show and why not? Every person has the right of thinking to do things independently. But since he was under a contract with the channel they opined that we should not take him back. I welcomed him back..kya huvauska show nahichalatoh?? This can happen with anyone.”
Working with Johnny Lever’s daughter, he says, "Usually, Johnny Lever has been a part of the director/producer duo Abbas Mastan’s films but that’s fine this time we will have to do with his daughter Challobaapnahi hai to betise hi kam chalaletehai. I have not met him but he is a very fine actor."
Revealing a fun-filled as well a stressful moment from the film, "Kis kisko Pyaar Karu", Kapil quips, "In the entire film I am trying to fool all my three wives but when it comes to , Karvachauth celebrations where my presence is expected at a given point of time, it made me a little serious. But thank god I have learnt as to how I will manage if a similar situation arises in my real life too (laughs)."
Ask him why he refused to do film with Yash Raj Banner? "They offered me a role not because I belong to the industry or I am someone’s son! They offered me a role because of my existence that I have made through my show. I did not wish to sign the corporate styled agreement which was almost of 80 pages thus I declined the offer. I am sure I will get offers from other big banners too. On the whole I am satisfied with all that God has given me.”
All praise for Rishi Kapoor, he says, "I was a little skeptical initially as I too have herald stories about his being short tempered but I was very pleased to note that he is a simple and a straight forward guy."
On Ranbir Kapoor's simplicity, Kapil shares, "That trait he may have acquired from his mother and not me!! The simplicity and the outspokenness of Rishi is what everyone likes about.”
Lastly, we quiz that Rekha and Amitabh too enjoyed your show and answered all your questions, Kapil smiles and says, "Aapinka naam back to back kyu le rahe ho!! [Why are you taking their names Back to Back??” He concludes with his signature style joke.
