Hyderabad filmmaker Jennifer Alphonse's documentary, ‘The Take Over’, about how digital medium has completely taken over the filmmaking process in India, has been selected to the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. It will feature in the non-competition section.
This is the second time that Jennifer’s work has been recognised by Cannes. In 2014, her short film ‘Strangerssss’, starring Bollywood actor Pitobash, had made it to the French aRiviera.
For ‘The Take Over’, a conversational documentary produced by Basi Reddy, Jennifer has interviewed the likes of Kamal Haasan, Singeetham Srinivasa Rao, Mani Ratnam, Suresh Babu, Ram Gopal Varma, Santosh Sivan, Rajeev Menon, Trivikram, K K Senthil Kumar and Vikram Bhatt among other eminent film personalities cutting across South and Hindi industries.
Speaking to Talkies, Jennifer said she is humbled and honoured to get a call from the Cannes for the second time. She said it was very difficult to get some celebs on board to speak about digital revolution in the country. “We didn’t have any great contacts. Besides me, my line-producer and cameraman had to reach out to most celebs and make them understand that we are making a documentary not some promotional stuff. But we were a happy bunch at the end of the day as most of them spoke their heart out while some in favour (of digitalisation) others against it.”
So, is she planning to meet Hollywood heavyweights like Steven Spielberg, Woody Allen or George Miller who will be attending the festival? “If you plan and go, you will not be able to meet anyone. But I’m hoping to bump into Spielberg and Woody Allen. The best part of the festival is they keep roaming around the screening area. Once you get your badge and main ID, there won’t be restrictions to meet them. You can go and simply introduce yourself to them. As simple as that,” said Jennifer who will attend the festival along with her mother.
Cannes will open on May 11. It will be the 69th edition of the annual event which will showcase the finest feature and short films carefully selected from around the world. ‘The Take Over’ will be screened on May 15.
