Highlights

it’s always really funny when you are auditioning with each other and are going through the audition process together, you feel really vulnerable and are always wishing Want me please, hire me please (Laughter).

The two of you obviously have very good chemistry on the show, did you know each other for a long time prior?
Jake Johnson: We actually auditioned the same time, same day

For the same part?
Jake: No I was always for Jake and He was always for Schmidt. I don’t think we could do it the other way, it would be totally different. It would be so gross if I had to take out my shirt and say look at my six packs, people would be like

what six pack abs tubby, it wouldn’t be the same effect.
Max: it’s always really funny when you are auditioning with each other and are going through the audition process together, you feel really vulnerable and are always wishing Want me please, hire me please (Laughter). You want to find a friend and we kind of found each other. We hung out a lot as the audition process turned out to be a long thing not only for us but for also for the show runners to select the other cast members.

Jake: We also didn’t quite know each other yet, so we did the audition and were hanging out like cool bros around each other, we didn’t realize what idiots we are, so after we gave the cool bro handshake and thought “Dude it would be so cool if you got the part and he was like yeah bro I wish the same for you too”.

Max: And when we finally got the part and we had to come together for these chemistry reads with the other cast members, there was Winston’s character who was coach at that time, but then we realized, at this stage as no one really knew us and we look enough like each other that they might fire one us. So we used to text each other “Hey Man, what you wearing today as I don’t want to look too much like you. It was funny it became like a wardrobe thing every day because one day we really did look a lot like each other and we were like “damn someone is going home”.

Jake: Yeah I remember, we came for a read with the same Colour shirt and Jeans with kinda messy brown hair and looked at all our executive producers and they were like ‘Wait a second’ and we were like No, No, No, I’ll wear overhauls were always different, always different.

You guys obviously became close and we know that you have kissed, how was it kissing each other on the show
Max: it was alright, I think it was Jake was against it at first, but then I was like just go with it, let it happen, be free in the moment
Jake: Max had to improvise kiss a bunch of times on the show
Max: I have been trying to do a lot of improv on the show and I would just go and kiss him and they would think please stop that’s inappropriate and they would never put it in the show, they finally put it in after the 7th time we had done it on the show.
Jake: All jokes aside my character, I have been very fortunate to kiss a lot of attractive ladies on the show.
Max: But I have been the best person you have kissed on the show.
Jake: That’s not what I am saying, what I was going to say that I have been kissed the most by Max in 6 seasons then I have been kissed by any girl I have ever dated.
Max: Yeah at first the reactions from you were really aggressive you would push me away or hit me and now when it happens and a lot of the times it’s in the script, he just kinda goes with it, he’s accepted it and that’s it’s a part of the show... Haha he finally accepted it.

Do you guys joke a lot of screen as much as you do onscreen?
Max: Yes we do joke a lot; we have an amazing cast, which we are lucky about as I have heard horror stories about other shows Haha. So yeah a lot of the joking of screen can be seen on screen amongst the cast.
